About us
We met by chance at an Australian beach in 2006 – a Californian girl (Cindy) with El Salvadoran heritage and a local lad (Sam) with a Kiwi dad. An unlikely couple perhaps, especially as we lived on opposite sides of the Pacific, but we soon found we had a lot in common. We’d both studied hard, Cindy as an electrical engineer and Sam as a lawyer. We both like to keep fit and eat well. And we both want to explore the world and experience different cultures.
We were married in Santa Barbara in 2011. We agreed to try living and working in both Australia and the US before really settling down, so after our honeymoon in Bora Bora we returned to Melbourne and good corporate jobs. Life was comfortable and secure, but we never lost sight our plans to live in the US.
Moving to a new life Stateside was a scary proposition, but it also presented us with a unique opportunity to take some serious time out between jobs and responsibilities to indulge our desire to travel.

The trip
Since we were first engaged, we’ve daydreamed together about backpacking through South America. We knew it would take time to cover the continent properly and some aspects of the trip were going to be challenging. But one event convinced us that 2014 is the perfect year to make the trip – the once in a lifetime opportunity to attend the World Cup in Brazil.
Earlier this year, we sold up most of our worldly possessions in Australia and flew to the US with our remaining belongings packed into half a dozen suitcases. On March 14 we will throw on our backpacks and fly to San Andres island to start an adventure that will take us through Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay and, of course, Brazil. After the cup, we’ll continue our travels through Central America. All up, we’ll be traveling for nearly six months.
We are looking forward to meeting interesting people, enjoying good food and wine, seeking out unforgettable experiences and trying to keep fit along the way. We’ve created this blog so that family and friends around the world (and anyone else who is interested) can keep track of our big adventure.
What then?
Later this year we plan to return to the corporate world, this time in California. However, you never know, we might fall in love with a Central American beach and set up a surfboard rental shop. If that happens, you’ll hear it here first!
